PROTECT YOUR FAMILY & PETS FROM CARBON MONOXIDE (CO) EXPOSURE IN YOUR HOME

CARBON MONOXIDE IN YOUR HOME?

If you have Natural Gas Combustion Appliances inside your home you should be aware of the potential health and safety risks of burning Natural Gas around your family and pets. One dangerous by-product of Natural Gas combustion is Carbon Monoxide. Allowing Carbon Monoxide to exist inside the living space of your home, needless to say is bad and may lead to sickness, poisoning and in extreme cases death. Combustion safety is serious. Do you know if your Natural Gas Appliances are producing Carbon Monoxide in your home?

POTENTIAL HEALTH RISKS TO PEOPLE & PETS

The publication, Medical News Today has reported that complications of Carbon Monoxide exposure may be serious and long lasting. Brain damage can occur and potentially lead to a progressive worsening of memory and concentration. Carbon Monoxide has been linked to the symptoms of Parkinson's Disease and Coronary Heart Disease if a person is exposed over an extended period of time.

THE NUMBER ONE CAUSE OF CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, "Dangers of poorly maintained heating systems are really going to be the number-one cause of Carbon Monoxide poisonings in the United States".

WHAT IS CARBON MONOXIDE?

Carbon Monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless gas that often goes undetected. Victims are usually caught off-guard or while sleeping. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention more than 400 people in the U.S. die from unintentional Carbon Monoxide poisoning every year. More than 20,000 people visit the emergency room and more than 4,000 others are hospitalized from exposure to this deadly gas.

Carbon Monoxide is produced in your home by burning fuels like Natural Gas in furnaces, water heaters, stoves, ovens, fireplaces, space heaters, generators, etc.

When this toxic gas accumulates in your home people and pets who breathe it can be affected. Low levels of Carbon Monoxide exposure can lead to chronic health problems. Higher levels can lead to acute health problems or even death.

Many of the Carbon Monoxide detectors sold for residential applications are designed to alert occupants when prolonged moderate to high levels of Carbon Monoxide are detected. Unfortunately, some Carbon Monoxide detectors may allow lower levels of Carbon Monoxide to exist in the home without alerting the occupants. This may lead to very dangerous long-term, low-level exposure to people and pets.

KNOW THE SYMPTOMS OF CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, because Carbon Monoxide is odorless, colorless and otherwise undetectable to human senses, many people are unaware they are being exposed.

The initial symptoms of low to moderate Carbon Monoxide poisoning are similar to the flu, but without the fever. They include;

  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea

High level Carbon Monoxide poisoning results in progressively more severe symptoms including;

  • Vomiting
  • Mental confusion
  • Loss of muscular coordination
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Ultimately death
